In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In order for our music video to be successful we had to make sure we developed the same forms and conventions of real media products. In order to do this we had to research and plan how we wanted our music video to turn out. We firstly watched music videos form Youtube to gain an idea of how we were going to film and what sort of music video we would have liked. There are 3 types of music video narrative, performance and abstract. After researching music videos we came to a group decision that we would include narrative and performance in our music video. We would have liked to have involved something abstract in our video how ever song choice was very hard and it was even harder to think of a way to involve all 3 types into 1 music video. After much deliberation we eventually came up with a song to use for our music video 'Light of day' by The Alfonz. We decided upon this track and artist because they are a band that originated from Swindon and played the introducing stage at Glastonbury one year. Although their album is on iTunes the band are not as well known as others. This made it easier for us as they did not have a music video for their song which meant that we could create one for it, using our own interpretations of the song and its meanings which also stopped us from copying straight from the video if it had one. The song was a perfect choice as it was classed in the genre of alternative which meant that it is a lively song thats rocky but not very heavy. It was also only 2:44 in length which was good because that meant that we did not have to film to much and the quick straight cuts would fit in perfectly. The next thing that we had to do was decide on what the narrative of the music video was and plan it out. We also had to decide where we were going to film our performance. To gain ideas of what type of setting we would use, we looked at other music videos and took note on their settings. We came across two videos that took our liking. These were 'Skyway Avenue' by We The Kings and '1985' by Bowling For Soup. We got our inspiration from these videos as the performance side of them is located in a garage and we thought that this setting would fit  perfectly with our band and style as it is very urban and gives the image that were still practicing. Luckily PK has a garage that we were able to use as it has a wide open space on the inside and a driveway running up to it that would allow us to place the camera outside the garage with the door open like in Bowling For Soup. We got most of our ideas from We The Kings as they had narrative in their video switching from inside the garage to a boy and girl on a date. This was exactly what we planned to do so the video helped us with timings and shots. In order to use, develop and challenge forms of real media products, we had to make our video look as professional as possible. To do this we had to include specific lighting, camera angles, camera shots, camera movements, actors, setting and costume. Through planning we decide that we should dress very indie as that is the genre of the song. This mean that we would wear clothes like skinny jeans, converses or daps, polo shirts, checkered shirts and black see through glasses. This adds to our image and acts as a type of uniform to make us look more professional in our video. We decided that our narrative would be about a boy meeting a girl in a pub, they both get drunk together and start flirting with each other. The boy would then manage to 'pull' the girl and they end up leaving the pub and walking back to the girls house to take things further and have a one night stand. This narrative supports Todorov's theory  and is often in the music industry. We thought that it would also be a good idea to have Joe as our lead singer as well as our main character because the performance and him signing would be like him telling a story of what happened. We decided to use a pub as the place where they meet as we were able to use one of the local pubs in Wootton Bassett when it was closed to film inside. This was a great place to film as motif of alcohol was all around us and we could use cut away shots and reaction shots to show this. To obtain the correct lighting in our performance shot, I used my Dad's plastering lights that are able to be hung up. We used three of these light and placed them one at the right hand side of the garage next to Gareth, one at the front of the garage by the corner for the door opening and the last one was the brightest one which we placed outside to light up the outside of the garage and the inside. After much moving around we found this positioning to be the best as it lit the entire garage up. Also, as Joe has very pale skin the light lit up his face the most which was exactly what we wanted as it portrayed him as seeing the 'Light Of Day'. It put more emphasis on Joe making him stand out and be the front man. The only difficulty that we faced with this lighting was that there were very big shadows along the back wall and on our faces sometimes where Pk would walk in front of the light when filming. However, lighting was much harder to do when filming the narrative especially the walk from the pub to the girls house as we had to film in the dark and away from electricity. We had to keep the atmosphere dark and desolate as the time in the narrative was supposed to be around 1-am in the morning.  The other convention that we challenged and used was the camera shots, angle and movement. In the video Skyway Avenue, it was clear that not all of our shots should be filmed using the tripod as this would make it look to static. Instead we filmed the majority of the video handheld. The slight movement of the camera completely changed the shots and made them more lively which is what we wanted for music video. We managed to take some inspiration from Skyway Avenue for our shot types as they had the correct proportion of individual shots and whole band shots. We brought this into our own video by using shots of individuals such as Rob on the drums but also shots of Me playing guitar yet still seeing Rob in the back ground. We also used shots that were of different and varying distances away from the subject which a typical convention of real media products. We then edited all of the shots together varying in quick cuts and longer cuts depending on the tempo and speed of the music and also the fee in the narrative. This is a regular convention in real music products to make the video worth watching and not boring.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I believe that the combination of our main product and our ancillary texts are very effective. Our aim was keep the same image that we had in our music video and carry it across to our ancillary texts. For example we wanted to show that we are close as band in our digipak just like we come across as in our music video. To do this we came up with the idea of having our faces in each corner of the front cover in the style of a mug shot. This would allow the audience to see us up close with out our instruments to see what we are like away from the music. After taking pictures of the mug shots I began to edit the front cover together. After a first attempt of putting the pictures together the front cover just looked boring as there was nothing to catch the eye. After further research and investigation, I found out that CD covers in a similar style did not all have the same style picture. Therefore I decided that there needed to be something different and slightly random. I changed the picture of Gareth so that he was massively smiling and then of me so that I was looking away leaving Rob and Joe looking at the camera and smiling slightly. I then edited the photo. I discovered an editing website online so I changed the photos into black and white and then de-edited everyones t-shirts to add colour that would stand out. I placed me and Gareth on opposite corners as we had the brightest t-shirts on and were doing the different poses. This evened the cover out massively. I think it is effective because each photo in the digipak links to the video and to the band. The front cover shows the band as they are without the music. Each picture shows the personality of that band member and gives audience an idea of what they are like. The photo of Joe with the political message shows that the band are light heart and don't follow mainstream acts of publicity. The use of binary oppositions in this photo such as the tie round Joe's neck yet he's wearing t-shirt and the anarchy sign shows that the band do what they want and what there fans want. They are genuine. This is also shown by the fact that the setting of the performance is in a garage which shows that they are laid back and as long as they are playing music they don't care where it is or how they look. The brick work on the spine of the digipak is a reminder of this and represents an urban and rugged feel to it. Also, the picture of the whole band together where the CD goes shows that they are a close band and best friends. This photo links with the front cover as they are now with their instruments. The magazine cover is also very effective as it is simple and eye catching. There is not much writing the cluster up the page and is straight to the point, just like the band is. The front cover is laid back which is also used on the poster so that people know what the CD looks like and what each of the band members look like. They will want to buy it because the CD cover already gives them an idea of the personality of the band. The combination of the digipak and the music video really gives the audience a feel for the band and what they enjoy.

What have you learnt form your audience feedback?

I have learnt from my audience feedback that everyone generally liked our video and thought it was very good. People that do not do media have said that it was very good. They especially liked our setting for the performance which was in the garage as they said it looked although we were just practicing which was exactly the look that we were going for. The main aspect that we continuously got told was great was the long shot of the entire band with the edge of the garage acting as a border. This was also everyones favorite shot as they said we lined the camera up symmetrically with the garage so that everything was even and well positioned. Another aspect that everyone liked was the fact that Joe was the main character as well as the main singer. People said that the song choice was really good and the lip syncing of joe with the voice and everyone else with the instruments as it was all in time and actually looked like we were performing the song. Nevertheless, one thing that people did comment on and said needed to be improved was the lighting of when the 2 characters walk into the girls house. They said that the lighting should have been better as they struggled to make out what was happening as it was to dark. The audience also said that the cuts and transitions between each shot were excellent and that the faded transitions were in perfect places with the overall mood and direction of  the song. However they added that in some places we should have added some effect on the image. It was suggested that each time a performance shot was cut to, then there should be a different colour fill layer of the top of the image. Everybody that watched our video liked our narrative and agreed that it was a solid story line but maybe should have tried something more imaginative and original. Finally, the audience agreed that the percentage of performance shots to narrative was perfect, also that the timings from going between the two sides was really good. The audience feedback helped as a lot as we were editing our video and when we had finished. It allowed us to go back and alter parts of our video that we had subconsciously missed for example we didn't have many individual shots of Gareth in our video until it was noticed by Jordan Riley. This then allowed us to include some more shots of Gareth to improve our video. Overall, I learnt that lighting is very key when filming as all of our audience picked up on the fact that the shot when the pair walk into the house is to dark. Also, i've learnt that a type of shot or movement can seem wrong to someone else than it can to you, for example a shot of Rob playing the drums was out of time with the music and I had not realised until Dan Wignal pointed it out to me. Finally, I've learnt that we need to plan thoroughly in advance and turn up to film knowing exactly what to do and so that your not rushed for time, including editing.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research , planning and evaluation stages?

For all of the stages, I have used this website called blogger.com to post all of my research and investigation so that everybody can see them. This is much better than writing them down on paper as they do not get ruined and they all stay in the same place. Another media technology that I used was a website and software called Prezi.com. This is a new and initiative way of creating a presentation to present to other people. I used this website to create a mindmap to show the locations that we would potentially be visiting to film at when Joe and Nikki leave the pub to walk home. Anther media technology that we all used was rather than post the pictures of the inside of the pub on the blog and writing about them, we gathered round as a group and spoke into a microphone to record ourself discussing each section of the pub. I then edited this together so that the picture we were discussing came up onto the screen at that time. Me and Pk also went round school and filmed a questionnaire asking people what they look for in a band and what they look for in a front man i.e should he be loud, quiet, boozy, fierce, timid and even what gender. We have all constantly been using Youtube and the internet to find out information to do with our music video. I also posted an interview of me asking my sister what she thought of our music video giving good and bad points. This was part of our audience feedback. Finally, we used Final Cut Express on the Macs to edit all of our footage to turn it into the master piece that is our final music video!

Evaluation - Joe

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

To get the highest grade possible, we had to use and develop ideas from real music videos in order to make ours look like its been done to a professional standard. This took a lot of research in to the indie/rock genre as we needed to get everything right from storyline to performance. This meant looking at costume, lighting, camera movements and other forms of mise en scene. Our main inspiration was the video by 'We the Kings' called 'Skyway Avenue'. After researching heavily into the story lines of the indie genre, we found out that most had the concept of boy and girl out on the town, boy hits on girl, they start flirting, fall in love and go home together all following Todorov's theory. Obviously there are a lot of different variations of this but this seemed to be the main style of plot. After finding this out we all agreed to keep to the traditional pick up story line. In the Skyway Avenue video, the video starts the morning after they had been to town or in a club (we presume) but we wanted to change that so we adapted the story line so that we showed the night that the two people met. This was an example of us using something and developing it to fit within our song however you could argue that we didn't fully meet todorov's theory as there wasn't enough footage there to meet all aspects of it. I do however feel that this was due to limited amount of filming time we had due to unseen events taking place with our actors. The performance aspect was also heavily influenced by the skyway avenue video however we also got some shot ideas from the 'bowling for soup' video, '1985'. In this video there a quite a few shots of the camera looking in at the band in a garage, from the outside. We liked this shot so we took it and developed it some more to fit with what we were trying to do. In their video they have it to look like the house is owned by well off American citizen with the mise en scene that they have used i.e. basketball  hoop and electric garage. Well we liked the shot but realised we had to change the mise en scene to make ours look like an urban, underground garage to fit within the indie genre. We did this by changing the layout of Patrick's garage by moving all expensive looking things out of sight and moving ladders, stools, old filing cabinets around so that we could continue our image as a band who hasn't made it yet. It wasn't only the mise en scene that we developed, it was actual shots as well. In the skyway avenue video there was this fantastic shot where the camera zooms in to the drummer clapping the high hat. Well we tried filming this a couple of times but the drum kit was layed out so we couldn't get everything in. So instead we filmed this shot but from a low angle and zooming out instead. This allowed us to get all of the drummer in and half of the drum kit which ultimately looked better when we came to edit it. During our editing we looked closely at challenging the regular indie storyline. Normally in an indie music video the lighting is very low key (kooks - naive/she moves in her own way), especially in the narrative and pretty much the same with the performance. Well we wanted to challenge this and have some light scenes. For example the lighting in the narrative (pub) is pretty light and the same with the performance. In the performance aspect we had 2 lights directly facing me to create this image of a light shining on us. This to give off the feeling that our big break as a band is coming soon but there are still some dark struggles to come before you get there. The lighting was so important to get right as we wanted that binary opposition of light vs dark.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I feel that the combination of our digipack worked really well with our main products. Whilst filming our main product we wanted to go with the rough, urban, underground indie look and we didn't want to lose that whilst making the ancillary. this is why i think each image done was successful as we didn't lose our image and pulled off a professional looking digipak. The front cover was taken and adapted from the blurr CD. We wanted something simple, something indie and this was perfect. Indie (recently) is all about fitting in with everyone else but having a little bit of Independence so what better way to have a front cover with all band members pretty much doing the same thing but with our own twist on it. Indie is all about simplicity as well with simple colours, this is why we cleverly chose the black and white imagery (all fitting in) but with different colour tshirts and funny faces (Little bit of Independence). This I feel was a successful image as we stuck to what we set out to do. Our next image was the one of the lead singer, in the style of a mug shot holding up an anti political message. This shot uses humour to appeal to our audience, attracting them to our band. We have used binary oppositions heavily in this image but still sticking to the indie style. The use of the tshirt gives that indie casual look, nothing too strange or different to show that we're following by everyone Else's rules (especially with the tie). However the message on the board is a funny anti political message that is showing the little independence that indie allows you to have, especially with the use of the anarchy 'A'. This again keeping to our indie, urban, simple and safe image. The Spin image is perfect for linking to our main product. Its a brick wall with the title of our band written down it. This directly relates to the urban, under ground image that we set out to achieve in our main task by using the garage. The back cover was perfect. We didn't want something directly related to the performance as after research we found out not many bands do that, but we wanted something that related to the genre. Converse has recently become a symbol of the indie scene and that's why is was perfect to use. We didn't have a converse with fancy colours on and we didn't use a fancy background. This because we wanted it to be simple, fit in with anything else, this directly relating to how we all dressed in the performance aspect and the inside CD slot. This image was the picture of our band in the setting where we filmed. This worked best as it shows we don't have the money to go out and do photo shoots because we are just a band practising in an urban garage (exactly what we were filming in, in the performance). The final image is one we would stick in the back page of the book, the festival image. Now this image is only there to show our love for music. We thought this could work well as we also tried to show our love for music in the music video. We tried to do this by the lead singer dancing and moving as well as the guitarists. This image then relates to the performance aspect of our video.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Our audience feed back was very helpful. We had lots of good comments and improvements suggested to us. The general view of the good points were all based on performance. People liked how we took to the task of getting the image and setting right. They liked how we found a good setting and really research everything from clothing to lighting. We were complimented on the variety of shots used and the movement of the camera. We've learnt that the camera movement is important as before the second time round filming of the performance, we had many people issue the fact that was hardly any movement. Luckily we learnt that from the feedback mid way through the task otherwise we wouldn't have been able to gone out the second time and get the exact shots we needed. The improvements were something to take note of as it was mainly things to do with the narrative. Mainly the issue was with the lighting in both the pub and the walking home. For some they said the pub was too bright for the Friday night setting we went for and the fact that there weren't many extras in the background. The walk home was mentioned a lot. Most people said the lighting was wrong for a couple of shots as it was too dark. (noted on Ellie's evaluation video). In some of our shots people also said that the camera went blurry from where it was too dark. Some said they liked that as it caused a drunk effect where as others said they would have preferred it if it was a clear shot. Overall i think we learnt that lighting is key when it comes to narrative and we really should have tried to add extra lighting when walking through the high street. I think we learnt that we shouldn't just accept it as the lighting is out of our hands as its a public place and we should have taken more time and effort and maybe thought of more ways to add a bit of light. We've also learnt that camera movement is key. Before we got the feedback mid way through our editing we knew something didn't look right but we couldn't spot it, and when we got told about the movement we could fix it. We've learnt that camera angels are also especially important in the performance aspect as they are essentially what makes it feel like a music video and not just some guys being filmed in a garage. We can take away from the feedback the it's the little things that make a good video, great. If we do this again we will all now look for ways to increase the lighting, or dim the lighting to make sure that everything is 100% clear and not blurry unless we plan it that way.

How did you use new media technologies in the constuction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

New media technologies have been used in out group from the very begining. We were first assigned the task of analysing music videos on the mac books in preperation for a seding task. This meant using MacBooks and youtube to repeatedly review any music video of our choice. these techologies allowed us to play and pause videos at any time giving us a chance to analyse every shot for its mise en scene making sure that we don't miss anything. After this task we were asked to set up a blog on blogger to keep a track record of everything that we've done this year. This new techonology allowed us to store information and post videos/links to give viewers a better idea of what we were talking about. After much research on music videos we had to take digital cameras and film our chosen music video. Fortunately we only had to film 30 seconds and it didn't have to be perfect, we just had to get used to all the equipment again and all the new software we would be using. The digital camera allowed us to record our filming with a good quality picture, This gave us a more professional looking video and we would be using this media technology for a while to come. Once filming was completewe would upload it to the MacBooks and import it in to final cut. Final cut is what we used to edit both our main product and our sweding product. We spent hours on this programme cutting down clips, trying to get the timing right and placing them all in order. This allowed us to get a professional looking video with clean cuts and if needed, different transitions. This also allowed us to make our long clips in to sub clips giving us an oportunity to see each shot individually and give it a name, ultimately making our lives a lot easier and the process a lot quicker. Bluetooth was another technology used in the process. We used this to transfer files from our phones to the MacBooks for example, Ellie and I recorded a video blog and uploaded it to the MacBooks via Blue tooth. This is also how we got most of our DigiPack photos on the blog as well, via bluetooth. We used microsoft word to edit and add some titles to the Front cover of our CD and we did the same for the information/credits page as well. Photoshop was used to create the frontcover and get the colours and the black and white tones in the same image. We needed a good editing programme to do this as we wanted it to look professional. Microsoft excell was by Ellie to create charts for the blog. This was also done by a high quality programme as we wanted a professional finish. Prezi and smile box was used by the group to get extra bits of media on our blog. These are two presentation websites that you can use for free to give you a funky finish on your blog. To create some of the digipak i had to use southpark editor to get the avatar looking image. Although we didn't use the image it was still a new techonology that was used in our media. Finally the tri-pod (if it counts as new technology). The tri-pod was used in nearly every section of filming. This allowed us to get steady shots when needed and allowed us to pan the camera easier.

Overall i feel this project was a success. I feel that we created a professional looking music video that met the criteria that we set. Our digipak was well made with professional programmes to ensure that we had a high quality finish to our photos. I think the blogging went well for the most part although i would have liked to do more if i could. I feel if i had been consistantly doing blogs then i would achieve a higher grade rather than all my blogs coming at once. In the end i feel that we managed the task well and recovered what we did well as a few weeks before, our whole project could have ended in an untter fail. If we could do one thing again it would be the narrative. I feel if we had changed the lighting a little then our project would have gained more marks and the final outcome would have been better. The user feedback helped us change out project for the better but with a little more time i feel that we could have vastley improved our project. In conclusion i feel this project was a success and we met the criteria that was set for us to a high standard.

Ellie Lubin Evaluation

Evaluation

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our music video, in order to make it as professional as possible, we tried to meet the conventions of real media products. We had to consider, however, that as the band is an indie/pop-rock band, some of these conventions would be challenged to evoke they are slightly rebelling and this musical genre and tend not to stick by the rules. It also represents the band as controversial and how some of these conventions have simply been developed and adapted to fit in with the nature of the band we were trying to portray. Todorov’s narrative theory suggested that every text goes through a storyline. It starts with equilibrium, then reaching disequilibrium, realization, then attempt at resolution, resolution and then re-equilibrium.  In a music video focusing on the narrative aspect, this is demonstrated through the storyline. A narrative has a clear storyline and so the theory is more easily applied. For example, in the music video ‘grenade’ by Bruno mars, also indie/pop genre, uses the narrative theory. It begins with equilibrium of when the couple are together – which the audience are not actually shown and this is so an example of how other media products have challenged these conventions, the disequilibrium is show when they have clearly broken up and he is devastated looking at old photos then realization he is realizing she is gone and then attempts to resolve it through going to see her with his piano. Resolution is found when she is seen with another guy and so he must move on, re-equilibrium is where she is happy, but he decides he cannot go on like this and so ends his life. In a performance video, this narrative theory is established through the story of the band. In our hybrid music video, we have applied this theory through our narrative and performance aspects. In our narrative the equilibrium starts with the girl and guy just going to the pub on a normal Friday night. This then turns to disequilibrium when they see someone they find attractive and the purpose of the night has changed. Attempt and resolution is then when they go back o her house and then spend the night together, however as they were not after a relationship, resolution is established when he leaves in the morning and then re-equilibrium is found when they can then go back to their normal lives. In the narrative, we have met the conventions of this theory. However the rock-indie style of music we have chosen to follow, tend to challenge these theories and not meet the conventions. You could argue that our narrative and performance don’t meet this theory, as the value of a one-night stand doesn’t have enough depth for the theory to be applied.
Props narrative theory, suggested that there are certain characters and important people in every storyline. It says that every text has a villain, a dispatcher, a helper, a seeker hero, a false hero, and a prize. This also evident in the Bruno mars video, when the villain is clearly himself, the seeker hero would be her new boyfriend and the false hero is him when he thinks he has hope in winning her back. She is the prize and so he wants to get her back. Similarly in our music video, it was difficult to apply this as rigidly as there are fewer characters in a music video than in a storyline or film. Challenging this convention is typical of a music video, or for each character to multiple roles proposed by Propp. In our music video, the main singer is the seeker hero. He wants to win the girl, who not only is the prize but is also vulnerable and used for a one night stand so could be perceived as the villain. The dispatcher is the bar tender, giving them the alcohol so they become less aware, and they are more eager to get back to the girls house. The false hero could also be the main singer or the female character. Either could be given this role as both seam to solve everything and be all the other wants the next day, as an audience we don’t know who ended it, and therefore both could be seen as the false hero, having given the other false hope.
Another narrative theory is Barthes codes. The Enigma code is applied. This is where information is deliberately kept from the audience t build tension, create suspense and exaggerate the unknown. The scenes in the pub use this code as the quick fast jump cuts using the editing to create suspense and hold things from the audience. As the narrative doesn’t use word association and the lyrics are open to interpretation, the music causes all the dialogue to be unknown, there for using enigma code to hide this from to audience. The Proairetic code shows how tension is created through acts and actions carried out by the actors. We applied this code to our production at the end, when they go to the girl’s house. The tempo of the music also decreases, allowing the tension to be built up as they walk up the stairs and into her room. The semiotic and symbolic codes we also used heavily in our production. This is directly linked to the motifs, signs and semiotics. In the pub scene, we used the shots of the beers, the different spirits the bar and bar tender to enforce the idea of drunken Friday night. When we first shot our pub scene, whilst reflecting we could see there was not nearly enough that gave the illusion of a lot of drinking, drinking and more drinking. When re-filming this we tried to incorporate as many pub filler shots as we could and in the editing tried to include shot like the male toilet to show show the pub and have interesting shots that were reflective of the setting. The darts board was particularly important, showing the game side of their relationship. The dart also reflects how flight is important but also how it will be over quickly and sharply – the same the one night stand. The girl character is wearing red shoes. Red is a colour of love and passion, evoking the one night stand relationship between the two characters.
Another convention of media products is to use binary opposition. Levi Strauss proposed that contrasts and challenging views helped strengthen a product using dramatic effect. We enforced this through the change is light and dark from the pub scene where its bright, lively and animated to the walk home which was dark and shadowy. Another contrast was between the open, public flirt in the pub to the private walk home, alone.
We tried to conform to the setting of the band. We wanted an alternative indie look, in which setting in a garage was perfect. Thankfully Pk’s garage was available and we could adapt it to look exactly as we had imagined and planned. The settings all came together and I feel that this conformed to how an ‘indie’ band would represent themselves.
When filming, it was important to not break the 180 degree rule. This proved especially difficult when filming the scene at the girl’s house, as the stairs went up and round a corner. To get round this problem, we just had the shots of the couple going up the stairs and then a straight cut to them going into her room and closing the door behind them. From our first attempt in the pub, it was really useful as we could find out what was really important and then make the rest of the filming better quality. We found that the shots that we hand held tended to be weaker, however moving shots were better hand held. This was important, especially in the performance aspect as we wanted lots of different angles. Some of the high angles were originally shot with someone holding the camera on the ladder, however, we then decided that using the ladder to hold the camera steady would establish a more stable and balanced shot, making it look more professional.
We also looked closely at creating the meaning at inception or consumption. In our society and climate, more pop acts tend to create their meaning at consumption. However, due to the amount of power a record label has over an act, this is slowly changing and so the record label can create the meaning they want to portray and how they want to present the act and inception also to the audience it is seemingly at consumption. According to the Adornos musical theory (1950s) which studied high and low culture, all pop music is meaningless, thoughtless texts and the passive audience allow these texts to wash over them. He also said pop has ‘standardized’ to a point where it’s almost just repeated each time, and so there’s no intellectual level needed to process this. We hope to challenge this convention on pop music, as I believe that our production the meaning was created at inception and there is meaning there. The metanarrative of the band is that they are typical ‘lads’ who play music and like to enjoy life. They come across as almost one dimensional, but then have a talent for music at a young age. We chose to set out storyline in a pub rather than a club, as we thought a pub had deeper thought. Going to the pub, playing darts in a lot more mature than going dancing in a club and reflects the band perfectly.

How effective is the combination of your main production and ancillary tasks?
The combination of our advert, digipack and music video allows us to understand the band as a whole. By creating an advertising campaign it really made us think carefully about the target audience and what would be the best way to reach them. In doing the digipack, I had to think about the positioning of things and colour schemes that all linked in with the metanarrative of the band. By creating all 3 pieces, we were able to create a true identity for the band, and establish their belonging in the music industry. I feel that our 3 pieces tie together well. The indie edgy look is carried through in all 3 products, which gives a clear concept to the band. The digipack itself I feel has worked well. The images link together well and all the conventions of a digipack were met, this made it seem professional and well thought out. As the band is a new band, they need to appeal to their target audience and reach them through advertising in order to have the ability to become more well-known and popular. The images used in the digipack convey humour, t make the band likeable, and use synthetic personalization to form a relationship with the audience. Their passion for music is strongly conveyed through the choice of photos, in the ‘festival’ look and the band shot. The indie look is also re-enforced through the use of the garage ‘band’ shot, the wall on the spine shows their strength and their strong cemented connections. Finally the last shot of the digipack, the converses evoke the normality of their teenage life, and that they are relatable for fans. The burnt orange writing relates back to the indie look and stands out against the white background, whilst linking to the spine in the burnt orange ‘wall’ colour. Finally, the shot we added in after looking at our digipack, we decided that the picture of Joe alone way strong than the ‘festival’ one and so we could use both for the digipack. The single image evokes his personality and uses binary opposition between the seriousness and the immaturity of the band, for example demonstrated in the tie contrasting with the t-shirt. The message displayed on the card closely links with the look we were trying to go for with our front cover. The ‘mug shot’ is perfect for the band as it shows their indie/rock roots and how they represent themselves. The magazine advert will be shown in 2 magazines in particular, appealing to both the male and female sides of the young target audience we have tried to aim our music at. The magazine advert, I feel is very strong. The image at the top is the same as the CD cover so is easily recognizable to our audience, it is aesthetically pleasing and the direct mode of address used by all except tom shows how the band are creating a relationship with their audience, and the fact that tom is looking away demonstrates how they are edgy and slightly rebellious by not conforming to the typical conventions in a shot like this. The added information at the bottom, the review are by companies that the target audience would respect the views of and would think highly of, and that date gives information to the fans. The download date shows how the band is up-to-date and current and is appealing to a wide range of audience.

What have you learned from your audience?
During the making of our film, we constantly asked our audience what they thought of our music video ideas and production. This allowed us to adapt what we were doing as we went along to suit our target audience, and try and make it as professional as possible. In the planning stages, we did a questionnaire, in order to establish exactly who our target audience were so we could appeal directly to them and then more focused on our target audience, what they wanted out of a music video. It was evident from this that a hybrid video was defiantly the most popular choice. When coming up with our storyline we wanted to make it believable and relatable for our audience, and typical for a teenage boy-band. The ‘one-night-stand’ concept was decided as it’s easy to convey and fits in well with our metanarrative and the bands performance video. We also found from our audience, they they prefer to be passively watching the video, and so the concept had to be simple and the performance entertaining and light. From playing our music video to a number of people, we have received positive feedback about the quality of the thought out shots. Even from when we hadn’t put together any shots, the ideas behind the choice of setting, our audience seemed to like. ‘The performance in particular is aesthetically pleasing, and is well framed’. When we filmed the performance shots, we filmed it twice using two different lighting the first time round, so that we could establish which was more effective. We than asked our target audience which they thought was more appropriate and better to watch, and then we went with that lighting to continue with. The lighting in second of the two was brighter, and this showed the expressions on our characters faces much more brightly. After filming the pub scene the first time, we received comments that the ‘actors needed to be more animated and expressive’ and we should try and incorporate ‘moving shots and more close ups of the actors faces.’ In the second filming of the pub we tried to use this, and found tried to increase the camera movement and get more dynamic shots, and have more close up, two shots in our filming. The two shot was said to be ‘nicely framed’ and the mise-en-scene of the pub was believable and appeared busy. The use of extras and their positioning meant we could make the pub look busy, whilst only having a few extras. In the walking home scenes, the shot out of the pub which was blurry had mixed reactions. Some comments suggested it pulled on the ‘drunken’ appeal of the music video, others said it looked like we had got a focus shot wrong. We debated over whether to use this shot or not as the group were split as to if it was professional looking or poor looking, in conjunction with our audience feedback. The song was commented on by a few people, as it was so unknown. Some said it was ‘catchy’ and that our music video fitted with it well. in the performance shots, we were told that the framing was really good. The edgy underground setting we were told was a ‘risk that has defiantly paid off’ and I think that it was a perfect choice of setting. Comments on the lighting across our main singers face were that it was good as the character was well lit in a naturalistic was, but was believable and showed the character is good. There was questioning of the shadowing as if it was the camera man, but it was quickly established this was just the other band members creating shadows with the due to the lights. Once we had established we needed to involve more camera movement, we tried to have a few moving filler shots in each setting. The shots through the banister we well received and said ‘they were realistic and at a nice angle. The movement up the door makes it easy t watch and draws your attention.’ I asked my friend Wil to interview him to see his feedback on our finished product. The video is above.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
From the very beginning of our production we have used new media technologies for our production. We set up an online blog using the site ‘blogger’ to keep an up-to-date portfolio of our production. This was available to all members and we used different ways of blogging to learn about the new media technologies available. To start with we learnt how to truly analyse a music video. This involved watching many music videos, applying theories, looking at sythethisia, semiotics etc in order to plan out our preliminary task. This involved careful research online in order to find the song we wanted to swede using YouTube. We then had to use a YouTube convertor in order to be able to use it on the editing software we were going to use ‘final cut express.’ We then used the internet to research into theories and conventions of media products – specifically music videos to add to the knowledge we already had, in order to do in-depth analysis of the foo-fighters video ‘Best of you.’ In order to film the preliminary task, we needed to use the cameras and tripods to try and create the same effect as the band had created. It was important to focus on lighting and shot type, whilst choosing the setting and actors appropriately. The camera movement was difficult at first, as we struggled to get the shots steady but with movement. After having established this we managed to film most of the shots and upload them onto final cut express. When we put our filming together, there were a few shots of a lion chasing birds which would have been impossible to copy, and so therefore we had to download a copy of the foo-fighters original video to cut out the shot we needed. Whilst editing our sweding task, we started to think about the planning for our own music video. It became apparent that we needed to really plan out our shots and allow enough time for editing. In our planning, we first came up with the sort of song we wanted to do. In order to make our music video more original, useable and overall more innovative, we wanted to make a video for an unknown band who don’t have a music video. My friend was the photographer of a band who had recently broken up for university. I felt this was perfect as they had no current music videos, we could create our own metanarrative. The only thing we had to base our storyline on was the 4 songs that’s they had released to try and establish a representation, and the lyrics of the song we chose. They had the social networking site ‘myspace’ that we could look at, but there bareness evoked how it was something they started but never continued with. The few photos they had posted and the biography they had written produced their school-boy image, and their outgoing personalities. After choosing this band, I did a short questionnaire to find out what our target audience were after, and what they would want out of a music video, by using excel I could create graphs and charts to collate the data to see the results in as clear way as possible. After getting permission of the band, we then started story-boarding and taking photos of the venue. The photos of the pub were taken on my phone, which I then sent via Bluetooth to the Apple Mac, along with a voice recording r a commentary of the pictures. We then combined the voice over with the pictures and changed it to a video file to upload to the blog. I then did the story board of the narrative aspect of the production, ready to film in the pub. I scanned these into my computer and changed them to image files so they could also be put onto the blog. Me and Joe also did a video blog, where we analysed the setting we were filming and uploaded this too the blog as well. After having filmed our first day in the pub, I wrote the diary entry for the day. In order to use new technologies here, I downloaded a ‘smilebox’ programme where I could create a slideshow for the blog which included the photos, diary entry and then posted a link to the video I was linking our shot types too. When we were filming, we used the tripod and camera to create the shot angles we wanted. We then went to set up the performance aspect of the video. When doing this we discussed lighting and decided we wanted to add filler lights to create the right lighting across the main singers face. We wanted a bright look as it was important that this character appeared ‘good’. Throughout the filming we used the tripod when filming any still shots, allowing them to be steady and consistent. When however filming the moving shots we made sure the camera man was still and practiced each shot before filming. When we filmed each shot at least a few times and made sure we allowed a few seconds either side of each shot and s when it came to editing this would dramatically improve the ability to edit, and stopping that the shots finished too immediately. In the beginning stages of our editing, we made all of our clips into smaller sub clips, making them easier to manage. We started off with the performance, where matching up the lip sinking in time with the music. The best way to do this we found was to keep the sound of the filming and then delete it after once we’ve established the part of the song Joe was singing. Each shot was labelled and so so easily recognizable when looking for a particular shot. When using final cut, I learnt a lot of how to split up a shot. For the darts shot, we wanted 3 shots immediately after each other. Originally I tried to cut up the shot and cut out the length between each time the dart hit the board, however because of the slight camera movement the cut wasn’t clean enough. Instead I sped up the speed of the clip to 200% which mean the darts hit the board within the right timings, without having slight jumps between each shot. The timing was difficult to manage as the the performance needed to be integrated with the lyrics, but it didn’t look right to change between performance and narrative half way through a line. In the making of the ancillary tasks, we used a hand held digital camera to get the shots of the band and uploaded them to Finepix viewer. I downloaded a CD template, to learn the sizes I needed to work to. When in the classroom, we changed and edited and added to our ancillary tasks. I used IPhoto to edit the digipack and Advert, and in order to make them look as best as possible. in order to use new media technologies in my evaluation, I recorded my friend Wil Page in an interview evaluating our video. To do this, I recorded it and then sent the file to the computer via Bluetooth, and then changed it to a QuickTime video. The blog had trouble uploading this type of file and so I then created a YouTube account, uploaded it too that and could then post the video through YouTube onto the blog.

Over all I am very pleased with our final production. Unfortunately, because of all the changes amongst the actor and actress, we had little time to film our ‘pub’ shot. The performance side of the video is easily the strongest and has come out exactly as we had hoped. The combination of the performance shots and strong editing also helped the narrative and so overall I am think it looks really effective. If we were to do it again, I think we would give ourselves more time to edit and film. Towards the end there was a real push in order to make sure we were finished on time, simply because the filming had to be kept pushed later and later. I think that the ancillary tasks have come together well and support our main production well.

Final Digipack

This is the front cover of our digipack. after much discussion, we have decided that this is the strongest image suitable for the front cover for our band. Tom came up with the concept after researching the Blurr CD cover, and added a quirky twist to the standard shot. this resulted with our cover shot being in Black and white but with the t-shirts in colour, to be aesthetically pleasing and different.

This is a shot of the main singer, this will be used for the front cover of the booklet. We felt, in order to the continue with our 'indie' theme and concept, it fitted perfectly. The message, clearly written in a 'scribbled' handwriting style, uses irony and comedy to evoke the how the band are playing on the seriousness. The binary opposition used in this shot - the tie representing the establishment but the t-shirt presenting the antiestablishment. However its not quite anarchy, to come across as playful from an ouside view in contrast, but the use of the anarchy symbol portrays the message that we want to tear down the establishment on the inside.

this shot started off as a cover shot, but after careful evaluation, we decided this would be the back page of the booklet with the credits on. We thought this would be a suitable image to show their passion for music, and their playful nature.

This shot will be used for the placement of the CD. It them in the band they are together in, showing their working class/school indie look. It shows how they are trying to make it big in the music industry, however as they are not recognized yet they are still stuck to their urban/alternative garage setting.

This will be used for the spine. This is the first thing that could be seen on a shelf in a shop, and displays their roots of the garage. it also shows how as a group they are cemented. This basically relates back to urban image, that we set out to create.

what could be more indie than converses? nothing. This is why we chose this for the back cover of our CD.  Originally, we came up with images associated with our band's metanarrative. After further research we wanted the image to be relatable to the genre of music. We tried to add features of a real CD. including web addresses, bar codes, price and other conventions of the digipack.

Our Magazine Advert

For the second of our ancillary tasks, we had to make a magazine advert.
The conventions of a magazine advert are that the image is the same as the CD cover, so that it is recignizable in the shop and the advert is clearly for the CD your trying to tell. it also says reviews, where we chose to have radio 1 and NWE magazine rating it, as theese would be appealing for the audience and something that our target audience would be exposed to, and respect thier opinion. the titles are in interesting font that complements the quirky style of the picture.

The colours we chose to use are eye catching and appealing. They are also in contrast with each other, and so each character seams to be original and have their own personality. The white writing on the bottom stands out against the background. the facial expressions on the boy's faces are immature and funny and so they become instantly likeable by the audience. they look 'cute' and 'alternative' and so are liked by all of our male and female target audiences. The expressions vary which shows their different roles within the band, however the costant background colour shows how they are all in it together. Tom (in yellow) isnt looking directly at the camera to show how they have rebelled against this conventional shot.

Ideas for our front cover

We each had many ideas on what sort of photo that we wanted for the front cover of our digipak. However, we all agreed that we wanted it to be a picture of the band. We had different ideas that it should be a performance shot of the band similar to the band 'Paramore' on their CD 'The final riot' where each band member is in a performance shot in a column next to each other on the front cover. Another idea was to just have the band looking at the camera with their instruments, or just holding their instruments. An example of this cover is 'The Kooks' and their album 'Inside in Inside Out'. Here you can clearly see each band member in the photo holding the instrument that they play. After much discussion on what sort of photos to take we asked Rob and Gareth what days they were free to take photos and when would they prefer to do them. However, due to Rob getting a new job with more hours it meant that we could only get all four of us together on one day.

On the morning of the day that we were taking pictures I took a look through my mum's CD collection to get some more inspiration and ideas for our front cover and a digipak to blog about. I found a CD which was very similar to an idea that was mention in the group. The CD was 'Blur: the best of'. I showed everyone else and we agreed that this would be our front cover.

<==== Blur: the best of

We all really liked this idea as it was very simple, effective and eye catching. It also clearly shows each of the band members which some CD covers often don't do. I liked the different colours of the background behind each person because it breaks up the overall image and almost gives a separate personality to each of the band members. We preferred the layout of the actual CD case on the left rather than the protective slip on the right because the pictures were much bigger and filled the whole CD cover. The pictures also made the title very clear and at a centre point to be noticed.

                        A nearly finished front cover====>
After school me and Joe then got Rob and Gareth to come round to my house to take the photos. We placed ourselves one by one against a flat blank wall in my bedroom and took many pictures from varying distances  and poses so that we had a variety to choose from. I then uploaded the photos and chose which ones I would use. At first I started off so that we all had a neutral pose and facial expressions. However, this was not interesting to look at. I the blur CD cover the faces are in the style of pop art so that it is catchy and different. Therefor, I used the photo of me looking off at an angle rather than at the camera and used the picture of Gareth with a big smile. This broke the cover up a lot giving a different image to each person. I also used an editing website on the internet which was http://www.picnik.com/. This allowed me change the photos into black and white, although this made the cover dull. Finally, I realised i needed to add some colour to the cover so I edited the photos so that the t-shirts we were all wearing are in colour and everything else is in black and white. The only thing left that may be changed is the writing and font in the middle as it looks to much like Microsoft word and not original.

Evaluation patricks (pk)

Media evaluation
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The way our media product has developed or challenges the forms of a convention of a real media product is by our intense research on the subject itself which has given us the ability to expand on simple ideas by Appling our own and because we are considered a technology born teens we are exposed to the works of media all the time giving us some knowledge that we would have naturally pick up. We tried to develop the forms of the media products by concentrating on using multimedia method .The kinds of mixed media in which our media project had consisted of to get to point of being able to be shown as a form of presentation to the audience. Was using mixed programs to demonstrate new designs and ideas into or blogs and our media , this was done too try to show our mixed media skills but also to make the music video stand out and get a smooth playlist of sounds and camera angles. One of the media processes which we had used was the following program of Imovie which had allow us to edit and create our music video more efficiently and effectively with the ability to adjust the sounds and effects on to the actual media project itself .With this program allowed us the ability to develop the music video too an extent where the shots match the rhythm and pitch of the song  showing a sense of professions and applying real life music video ideas to our own such as using the typical garage door setting had helped with making the actual music video more realistic. And to make the setting stand out more we had used the resources provided to us efficiently by placing lights in areas in which will not directly hit band members which might create some distortion to the viewers but placed in an area where it will bring light too the setting and get a clear view of all band members. There were troubles in the actual process of filming of the uncontrollable shadows lurking around the video but in the whole does not bring the video down but just an aspect which we would like to have gone .
A way in which we had try to make the our media product more real was by using the data collected and focusing to a specific audience allowing us to expand or use of media to become a firm in which who uses certain techniques and aspects. These would contain using narrative and performance theory to our own music video and using some form of Vladimir theory into our product. We had started by setting out our music video into different section with Todorovs theory with creating an disequilibrium as well and a resolution to our music video .But the way Vladimir theory was applied was creating a central character in this case will be Joe who is considered the male lead in our narrative theory side and the performance. By doing this we had used Joe as the centre man (lead singer ) he was chosen due to his unique sense of fashion and out of all the band members will be considered the most good looking making him the most ideal choice for the centre man , the way this helps our music video seem more real is because with our research we saw that many bands use this method of a centre man examples will be maroon 5 and bowling for soup and many more and to make our own music video too seem more real we decide to go with this kind of structure .The structure is clearly shown in the music video with the placement of the band members alone and how the camera is always directed at Joe with almost 70% face time to the camera.
How effective is the combination of your main production and ancillary tasks?
The effectiveness of our main product and our ancillary task is that we were able to use the skills and the concept of that task to develop our skills to a point where it is more acceptable to be used in actual filming process. The actual task itself needed us to create a music video in which is a Swede of an actual music video. Basically we had to mimic a music video and the one we had chosen was Foo fighters the best of you. We had chosen this due to the fact the concept of the actual design seemed to be able to do due to our lack of resources. Also having a lot similar shots to our actual music video so when it comes to our actual music video we can produce shots more accurate .The actual video itself had a mixture of narrative theory and abstract which worked together showing meaning in the music video and shows tension and a variety of techniques. In one of the shots we had actually used in our music video due to its ability to make the viewer seem less powerful with the low angle shot looking above the singer showing they are above them. Another shot idea we had received from or ancillary task was the extreme close up shot of the singer pressed against the microphone which shows detail I the actual face of the singer as well as showing dominates to the viewers with the frightening tension you get from seeing this .
What have you learned from your audience?
I have learned a wide range of things through the kinds of audience in which our media task had wanted us to analysis .The things I have learned where that in a general sense audience range can be split up in many different sections such as in age ,size and gender and other aspects to be taken into an account .The main aspect I would see we have learnt and was most important to understand in this would be knowing how to identify what social groups in which people inhabit in these groups ,the different types of groups. We first study and researched our audience learning how different social groups react to different situation ,A way we had decide what different social groups were there was by trying to split the groups into school social groups such as popular ,Non popular ,sporty and many others . To get a better idea of what our audience are we try to spot out the main aspects of these social groups showing us why they are in them ,Like for instance for sporty social groups the audience will be very active people who have an expert sport they generally like and most likely belong to a team .By knowing these aspects we get a better idea of what kind of audience we are trying to attract .
Which allowed us to expand our ideas of our audience and get a better understanding of there wants and needs .As we all know everyone has a different taste and wants and so all this was a essential to our final piece of work. The way we collected the information our information about our audience was using varies way such as using questionnaires collecting information about there lifestyles and what kind of clothing they where and even to the point we ask how often the will purchase cds and music to get a better idea of what are audience are, as well as using multi-media with using a camera and generally going around school and asking a variation of people a series of questions involving what they are looking for in a band member .We in the whole got a wide range of answers but by suing the video camera we were able to analysis the clothes looks of each person we filmed to get a clear perspective on the characteristics .The audience in general we have finally chosen through our research was a similar image in to or band members ,This will include the actions as well as the style of clothes our band members will wear to get a good connection with the audience in knowing there is similarities between the audience and the band member. Which we have learnt that in our research creating a  connection between performers and consumers helps with making the consumers seem more entice in purchasing or admire the band it self making a disbelief of them being able to become them one day . With the audience we have realised they are to be considered to be a digital native which means they have been brought up in a technology based lifestyle .Having this information helps us realise the likes and wants of the audience and get and understanding and what we learnt about our audience .In the basics we have learnt that our audience has been very different over the years due improvements in technology ,this has created more complex audience who require more complex methods of media to keep them entertain as well as having advertisement be expand in different ways effecting the audience perspective on certain media effecting how will react too certain images and how some parts of media can effect judgement and allowing our research contain these aspects can allow us better knowledge of the audiences. So what we have learnt is there are a variation of different types of audience we can pursue on .

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
The media technologies which we have used to produce our music video was a series of developed technology throughout the years .In the actual construction of the music video we had used muilt-media technology which provided us the ability to rearrange certain images to our whim . One example of the construction technology would be the use of a canon camera a piece of technology which has been around since the 80s was one of the main technology used .By comparing what camera can do now from back then the quality of filming and the constructions has improved massively due to the ability to be able to zoom in and out ,also adjustable focus has allowed a variation of techniques in filming to be pursued to by users as well as having the camera itself be able to have different modes in order to film in different situation therefore situation concerning day or night will not be an issue with the night vision feature. And with the ability to import into the computer allows users to use programs to adjust and alter the film. But there are troubles concerning the there are limits to the camera ability to zoom in and out also the hard ship of the camera not begin aide enough to be able to catch the whole image into the shot forcing alteration into the actual video itself causing a delay in production and constructions. Another ability the camera has it the ability to use a tripod to be able to get a more accurate and steady motion when filming improving quality and helps speed up production time with less retake being involved. This piece of technology has also help us be used as a planning stage for our media project by analysing certain shots and testing on how we set them up as well as testing panning ,crane and high angle shot efficiently in order to get the best outcome to our media project. Other aspects in which allowed me and my team to create and develop our media product was to simply plan out our settings and scene for our music video .This was done by us choosing a concept appropriate to our idea of what kind of band members we had .So the planning stage required us to use different methods and media styles to show the area and the way we had done this was by using Imovie and making a short clip/Documentary about or settings too give the examiners a mixture of different media styles to present our work .Which is the whole had worked very well in begin able to import short clips and examples and music videos and show how the we have choose the right  parts of the videos too analysis.
Other media technologies has also been great asset such as social networks which has changed the way we digital natives communicate and other use of technology such as YouTube has been a huge asset to the media industry. Developing the way we communicate with one another ,an example of this would be Facebook a social network with over a billion users a media heaven for advertises and publicly . The reason for this is due to the large demand of accounts as well as begins able to upload varies photos video and comments to let the world see. And the way this joins into our media project and how Facebook helped with the research side was begin able to post questionnaires about certain subjects too millions of viewers giving us a hug amount of information to show what are the likes and dislikes to certain areas of our media. Also with this particular social network allows people to post comments about certain subjects ,these subjects will contain music social groups and so on and with Facebook allowed us the ability to send pictures and videos of examples of music video and pictures for certain areas of our coursework .Generally helping with the production process of the music video and expanding our knowledge by showing us examples of the kind of style over users have. But the downside is that with Facebook that there is the ability to like and dislike certain post which the end may cause unpopular advertisement if a someone has a grudge. Other social networks have also had a huge impact for new technology for the media industry and how we had applied that use to our own. One with twitter a source of communication to each other in order to not lose track with our group members. Another popular social network we used which has become very popular in which we had used for our planning and construction of our media product was the use of my space. The reason for our group to use this sight cause other bands will create a page in which will get a daily check up and post comments and anyone can join the MySpace group and check out what each movement the band members are doing . By knowing this we had allowed us information about a similar band to get a better perspective on how they laid out their page for our own what were there cd cover was like and many more .Another aspect used for planning was using YouTube in which has millions of music videos so getting inspiration from this new technology helped us apply this to our own work. Therefore allowing us to post videos onto YouTube to get consumer views on the video in order to get a better idea how successful our music video is which gives us the best evaluations of our music video allowing users to comment anything they like as well as the ability too like or dislike the video will give us a idea on the evaluation of our music video.

DigiPack

For the first of our ancillary, we had to create a digipack. A digipack (as explained fully in early blogs) is a extended CD package, which give extra information to the audience and has more pictures, credits, information etc.

for our digipack we came up with a variety of ideas of how and where to shoot our images. each idea seamed to have flaws and we needed some consistency throughout the 4 images. the denotation 'Indie band' has millions of connotations and there were so many semiotics and motifs that we could use to portray our band. when coming up with the front cover, we were thinking of original spins we could put on traditional ideas that would make our band's cover unique but attractive and almost recognisable. we came up with the idea of putting a spin on the traditional 'mug shot' picture and using this as our primary image. for the inside covers, a shot of the band under the CD seamed natural. this evoked the band and re-enforced who they are, what they do and being behind the CD, allows it to reflect their passion for music. the image on the inside of the digipack, is a shot of 3 of the band members. throughout the entire digipack there would be a variety of shots of the whole band some with certain members some with others. but this shot of the main singer and the 2 guitarists shows who's is at the front of the band. It is also humorous and reflects the jokey nature that the band have towards each other. This not only reflects their age and target audience, but also creates synthetic personalisation between them and their audience and the audience take an instant liking towards these characters. There is a relationship forming between the band and the audience as they can share inside jokes between them. this relationship is extremely important for the band as it forms their fan base. The final shot on the back is simply a pair of converses. i feel that this is directly typical of the band and in the previous shot, one of the band members is wearing converses forming that link between each shot. The intertexual reference to the brand converse shows their diversity and represents how they are also normal, average teenagers.

below is a breakdown of a template of a CD cover, to show the dimensions and how our digipack will fit together.

once these dimensions have been applied, our images would be usable for the digipack. This is our front cover -

This is the front cover of our digipack, we have done this as it is quirky and original. This has the parental advisary sticket to show the content and make sure its appropiriate for the audience. These images of the band show their fun side, and the direct mode of address creates synthetic personalisation with the audience and forms a relationship. The coloured t-shirts of they are wearing shows give them colour, and a proffesional finish to the from cover. the title 'back to basics' uses alliteration and is catchy and memorable.

In this shot the humour is used to show the connection between the band. The animated background shows how they live a busy life and are 'festival go-ers' and so deepening their passion for music. The bright blue is the colour that comes accross strongest from toms top - evoking the band as calm and neutral. The credits over the top meet the conventions of a digipack, and show that the band themselves wrote the songs. The 'thanks' is shown as they are thanking their family - showing their young band and mention being and school, relating them t the audience and their innocent youth making them instantly likeable.
The web address as the bottom, also a convention of the digipack, shows how they are constantly trying to promote and that they feel that a good way to stay in touch with their fans is via the internet, as this is the culture of today and so they are in keeping with the fashions and maintaining their relationship with their fans.

The second inside cover looks like this-

This image of the band shows how them doing what they love. The framing of this show sets it up perfectly with the CD. This continues the indie look of the band, and the garage performance of a new band trying to 'make it.' The alternative look of this makes them appear a well balanced band and gives the illusion they have been together for a long time. the rule of thirds is applied in this shot as the main singer and perfomer are standing on the lines of interest, this makes it aesthetically pleasing and and pleasing to look at.

The spine of the digipack looks like this. this also reflects the garage 'alternative' look whilst showing the band's name. The white font stands out against the wall background. the wall also shows how the band are strong and have strong, cemented connections.

Finally the back cover looks like this -
The converses reflect the indie look of the band. they evoke the normal teenager look, and against the white background look strong and clean. the burnt orange red writing stands out from the background, and fits in with the garage, underground idea that the band try and present.
the price and barcode conform to conventions of a digipack and allow it to be sold across strores around the UK. the 'enforced CD' symbol reflects how it is a digipack and not just a standard CD and then producers and songwriters are credited, as well as where and when it was produced. it is als 'copyrighted' so that no other company can take the songs or bands image and the web address is posted along the bottom to re-eforced how fans can follow them on a day to day basis.

Filming - Pub

Filming in the pub was a tricky task to do. Not only was it hard to book it on a date we were all free but once we got it, they had put up their christmas decorations. When we finally got the pub booked out, Patrick, Tom and I went down to film. As we had previously done some filming in the pub, we knew roughly what we had to get. The day before we filmed we thought we weren't going to have any extras, but on the day we managed to get 4 extras including Patrick. We all met down there and realised that we only had 45 minutes to get all filming done before the pub had to open. One thing that worked in our favour, as it was so near to christmas, it was really dark outside meaning that we could include shots which had the window in, where as before it was light outside meaning we had to avoid shots with the windows in. As we had such a limited amount of time, we had to get straight in to filming. First of all we did a continuous shot of me walking towards the bar, talking to one of the extras, looking over at Nikki, the other extra come and ask me to move, then i move over towards Nikki. We had to do this as the extras we were using weren't the most helpful so we didn't know if they wer going to be there one shot and not the other. Luckily for us we managed to get two takes of this so we had something to compare. We then went to shots of Matt (the barman) pouring me a pint in a close up, and then him giving me the pint in an over the shoulder shot. Remembering back to what our teacher had advised us, we had to get some reaction shots in there in the form of close ups. So next, Tom filmed Nikki and I talking/flirting with each other whilst doing flirtatious actions, i.e. me winking and Nikki flicking her hair back. We then went on to film the film where we got the darks from Matt and then walked towards the Dart Board. This was split up in to two sections, Nikki and I walking round the corner to the bar, and then from a different agnle, Nikki and I walking towards the dart board. All of the shots we did were mid shots as we wanted to get across that we were actually in a pub. The next shot wa sme walking up to the dart board and throwing a single dart, I would then walk back and give the darts to Nikki and she would through a single dart as well. This then leads me on to the next bit of filming. We then got Matt to come and through 3 darts at the board whilst we filmed the dart board in a close up shot from front and side on. We did this because we had an idea of speading up the darts as if they were hitting one after another straight away. We thought this would make the night seem as if it's going on for some time as a lot is getting done due to the speed up.  This would also give us a variety of shots and something to blog about when we're explaing the speed up shot. The next shots we did were the ones where Nikki and I were sitting down at a table and she moved her hand on to mine. We did this to show in the story that as the night was going on, we were growing closer and getting more attracted to each other. After this we wanted to emphasise the fact we were drunk so we filmed us two walking over to the bar and getting shots of 'vodka'. We then filmed a close up (high angle) of the bar table. Nikki and I would then pick up the shots and slam both glasses down on the table simultaneously. Whilst in the same bit of recording, slammed down 4 more glasses. We didn't show us drinking the shots as we thought it would add effect if we sped up the shot taking, to make it look like we're drinking a lot in a short space of time without taking any breaks. Once we figured that we had got across that Nikki and I were drunk, we filmed us leaving the pub through the front door. When filming i opened the door for Nikki and let her go out first to seem like i was a gentleman to get across the feeling i was being nice to ultimately get with her. After we had done this we needed to film some extra shots, just film anything and everything that happens in pubs. We filmed a couple of our extras talking at a table from a high angle, we filmed a barmaid sorting out the fireplace, an extra smoking outside and another extra passed out on a table.  We also filmed Tom going in to the Gents toilet. These were just extra shots that would litereally just be flashes in our music video to truely show that it was a pub environment. On our way out we thought that we needed to get a shot of some alcohol of somedort, so we quickly got out the camera and filmed from a low angle, the spirit line at the top of the bar. We did this make the alcohol seem most important, adn that's why we're all there. For the limited amount of time we had i'd say this day of filming was a great success like the others. If we had more time we could have made more than 1 take of each shot we did and maybe plan out better extras but fortunately for us all the shots looked good and we didn't need a lot of footage of the extras.
