Joe and Ellie interview of Setting

Ellie: we are planning on having the beginning our narrative aspect of the production set in a pub. 

Joe: For the performance aspect of our production, we are using a garage and will show the band performing, like we the kings did in the video ‘skyway avenue’. 

Ellie: In the pub, we will use a variety of shot types to demonstrate the characters in the way we want the audience to view them. We will start by panning round the pub to set the scene, and show the setting of the pub. Then we will have a jump cut to a two shot of the boy and the girl at the bar, to show how their relationship is forming and using their body language, show how the romance is starting to appear. 

Joe:  The pub setting will be busy evoking the excitement and buzz of a Friday night. Then the story will start to focus on just the boy and girl. Throughout the next couple of shots we will see a few close ups to show the emotions that our actors are feeling desire, excitement and lust. 

Ellie: When the pub scene comes to a close, the 2 characters are seen leaving the pub, and going back to the girls house. On the way home we will show them going through the streets. We have planned our route so we can incorporate the different shot types and lighting. We can choose our lighting to evoke different emotions and feelings. We will have low key lighting to show its night time, but use filler lights to create effect. We also plan to use stop motion to show how as the journey continues the relationship continues and they become closer and more eager to get back to her house.

Joe: once they arrive at her house, we will shoot a two shot of them both in a drunken state. The girl will be attempting to find her keys and go inside. We will then continue to film them going upstairs, and slamming her door.

Ellie: We will then finish by filming outside her house and show it going from night to day in a fast-forwarded way. The last shot will see the guy walking down the street very early morning, leaving her at her house after the one night stand.

First Thoughts After First Day Of Filming

After filming in the 5 bells for the beginning of our narrative, we uploaded our footage from the camera to the editing software Final Cut Express and collated the footage into separate sub clips for easy use. When looking back at our shots our first thought was that there were not enough close up shots of the Matt and Ellie's faces to show emotion. We also decided that we needed to have more extras in the pub. We only had to extras when we filmed which showed that the pub seemed empty and was not busy. This also made it hard to film when Matt and Ellie changed rooms as we could not move our extras into that room as well which meant that the room was empty. We came to the conclusion that we should include more extras in the pub to make it seem busy and lively, we also decided that we should included cut away shots and reaction shots of the extras. These shots should be quick and included them drinking alcohol to represent the pub environment, them laughing and having fun and even shots of them entering the toilets to use the symbolic 'ladies' and 'gents' toilet signs. We also found that our shots were to static. We researched other music videos that were of the same genre and style and found that the camera movements were shaking a lot and were more hand held rather than still to compliment the rock style of music. Therefore, decided that we would also include this style and re-shoot the shots. The lighting of the majority of our shots was very good and the clarity of the shots was exactly what we wanted. However, the lighting in some shots was not the same as it changed depending on the direction the camera was facing. We will correct this by using our own lighting to compensate for the change.

Due to recent unfortunate events and the availability of our actors, we have had to change our main characters from Matt and Ellie to Joe Soden and Nikki Balson. Joe will also now be the lead singer in the performance part of our music video. This was unfortunate but now allows us to refilm the whole of the pub scene again which will allow us to correct everything that we filmed before.

This is the story board fr the narrative side of our video. As our video is a hybrid video these shots will be separated by performance shots, we will decided how to separate them due to the tempo of the music, how it fits with the lyrics and as the storyline unfolds.

Todorovs

Todorovs Narrative Theory

Todorov’s Narrative theory is spilt up into 5 different section ,first section would be   equilibrium where in media theory will be considered neutral where the main character is at a state of begin normal and carries on to the second narrative theory. With Disequilibrium where the main character will experience troubles in his story and then tries to resolve the situation which will lead us to the third part of the narrative theory the Resolution. The resolution will involve the main character to attempt to resolve the current disequilibrium which some narratives theory will sometimes end with for example the “Harry potter” series uses this as a cliff-hanger method as a way to entice there audience in watching the next film which has seemed to be a successful method. After the resolution the fourth narrative theory will appear showing when everything comes back to normal Re-equilibrium this will happen when the disequilibrium has been solved allowing the main character to go back to equilibrium . The final narrative point will be when the character/Hero depending if your using Vladimir propps theory (Example and description on next paragraph). The final narrative point will be used a cliff-hanger or even as a happy ending due to the fact its creating a new equilibrium which most likely will involve new characters  or could be a adventures with new problems this method will most likely be used in tv series or drama .

Vladimir Propp’s Theory involves displaying media video having certain a display of separation of evil and good .This is shown using the typical fairy tale description for example having a hero the main character and a villain considered the second main character in the media image as well as the princess in other words the damsel in distress .With Vladimir theory the hero will save the princess after defeating the villain and then be rewarded by the king the relation of the princess. These are example of the other settings for the Vladimir theory :

The 8 characters roles are:

1.      The Villain ( The Hated character also the one of the main characters)

2.      The Hero (The preferred character as well as main character)

3.      The Donor (Gives help to the main characters)

4.      The Helper(Close friend of the hero and helps around )

5.      The Princess( the damsel in distress can be male or female )

6.      Her father ( give reward to the hero for his work )

7.      The dispatcher ( gives tasks to hero or other characters )

8.      The False Hero( Mistaken hero most likely cause of disequilibrium)

With our music video we will be using a our narrative theory side will be set out in a Todorov’s theory style but apart from having ,All the five points we have decided to leave the music video in a cliff hanger sort allowing us to create a mystery in our music video making the music video seem more of an incentive to keep watching.

We will set out the music video with having the equilibrium as the a normal average day at the pub with matt as the main character .Carrying on the narrative theory side of the music video we will create a disequilibrium to the music video with the main character trying to court the maiden and getting rejected ,creating an conflict in the music video .This will be shown with the use of creating mystery in the music video, which will carry on to be resolved  with the main character impressing the girl ,creating the resolution of the music video . Which will then follow on to re-equilibrium having the main characters ending scene which is walking away into the distance after succeeding in courting the girl in the pub showing the equilibrium .

Commentary On 'The 5 Bells' Pub
